Queen’s returned to the Louis Riel Dome and for the second weekend in a row posted some superb results. The Gaels returned home with 4 ALL TIME TOP TEN performances, 11 OUA TOP 8 Standard, 6 high performance standard, and 6 OUA standard achievers, 16 PB’s, and 20 medals (8 Gold, 8 Silver, 4 Bronze). The Gaels are next in action Friday and Saturday, Jan. 25-26 at the McGill Team Challenge which last year saw almost all OUA, Quebec and Atlantic schools square off for Eastern Canadian bragging rights.
ALL TIME TOP TEN PERFORMANCES
LEAH LAROCQUE: 1000m – 2:53.64, #5 ALL TIME, GOLD, PB
Rookie Leah Larocque came up huge once again running to a big PB and the 5th fastest time in school history. Based on last week’s CIS rankings this result vaults Leah to the top of the CIS rankings. Two track races have resulted in two ALL TIME performances, two results that have her ranked in the top two in the country, two gold medals and two huge PB’s. What a start to what is shaping up to be an outstanding season and an incredible start to a university career.
LESLIE SEXTON: 1500m – 4:36.68, #7 ALL TIME, GOLD, PB
Leslie crushed her 3000m PB last week and raced to the top of the CIS rankings, this week she put in a little “speed” work and crushed her former 1500m PB of 5:01.74. Leslie’s time based on last week’s results ranks 3rd in the country behind teammate Leah Larocque.
MATT HULSE: 1000m – 2:28.08, #7 ALL TIME, GOLD, PB
Sophomore, Matt Hulse, sat on senior Braden Novakowski through the first 700m then charged by working hard to hold Braden off through the finish line. Based on last weeks CIS rankings this result would be 3rd in the country. Based on his first two races of the season I think its fair to say Matt isn’t going through the sophomore blues.
MIKEY PRIME: 300m – 35.84, #8 ALL TIME, PB; 4x4 – 51.6, PB
Mikey had another outstanding day. He cruised to a PB in the 300m and came back with a superb 4x200m and 4x400m legs.
OUA CHAMPIONSHIP TOP 8 PERFORMANCE
LEAH LAROCQUE: 1000m – 2:53.64, #5 ALL TIME, GOLD, PB
LESLIE SEXTON: 1500m – 4:36.68, #7 ALL TIME, GOLD, PB
MATT HULSE: 1000m – 2:28.08, #7 ALL TIME, GOLD, PB
MIKEY PRIME: 300m – 35.84, #8 ALL TIME, PB; 4x4 – 51.6, PB
ELIZABETH MILLER: 1000m – 3:00.09, SILVER, PB
Liz had another outstanding race following up her scintillating 1500m with a superb 1000m which saw her destroyed her old PB of 3:08.66.
MICHAEL NISHIYAMA: 600m – 1:22.80, BRONZE
Michael posted a superior first 600m result of his university career. He positioned himself well and worked to stay with the front runners throughout the race.
DAVID BURR: 600m – 1:23.21
David came in Michael’s heels to post his best 600m of the year.
BRADEN NOVAKOWSKI: 1000m – 2:28.73, SILVER
Braden set the pace for the race and almost came back on teammate Matt Hulse in an attempt to wrestle the gold away from him. It was a solid opening race for this standout senior.
CHRIS BRENS: 1000m – 2:31.31, PB
Chris was right in the thick of the battle and got hauled to a significant PB.
JOSHUA POTVIN: 1000m – 2:33.89
Rookie Joshua Potvin opened the season with a strong race which saw him slip under the team’s OUA Top 8 standard.
KURTIS NISHIYAMA: HIGH JUMP – 1.90m, GOLD
It’s the first time in his Queen’s career that Kurtis has broken 1.90m more than once in a season.
HIGH PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
LAUREN ZINTEL: LONG JUMP – 5.23m, GOLD
Lauren hasn’t had a result under 5m this year. Her consistency indicates a big jump is brewing and her PB of 5.30m is likely to soon to be broken.
JEN TAM: 60m – 8.16; LJ – 4.91m, SILVER; 4x2
As indicated in last weeks write up Jen has never had a better year in terms of consistency in the 60m. For the second week in a row both her heat and final result were sub 8.20 seconds. Sooner or later Jen is going to bust one and smash her PB of 8.10 seconds.
BRI ESHLEMAN: WEIGHT THROW – 12.27m, GOLD
Bri has been hampered by a bad back all fall. She’s worked through it but was unable to throw until the beginning of January. Capable of a very limited number of throws in practice and not able to wind yet, she’s moved to 3-turns and looked great. The speed was there, what was missing was the “catch” of the weight and get it up on delivery.
ADRIAN HELLER: 300m – 36.58, PB; 4x2
Adrian missed competing last weekend as he was in the hospital with a nasty case of the flu. Still not feeling 100% he put in a game effort to eclipse his previous best of 36.64.
NADIA TATLOW: 1500m – 4:54.33, SILVER
Nadia got totally hung out to dry with no one around her. She basically ran a time trial. Given the circumstances while she was 0.14 shy of the high performance standard I think its safe to say she’ll have it the next time she’s in a “real” race.
GORD FRENKE: 300m – 36.95, PB
Gord a rookie ran a brilliant race to surpass his old PB of 37.58.
OUA STANDARDS
ANDREW SISLEY: 60m – 7.37
Andrew has return to the team after a year away since his graduation in 2006. He opened his post undergrad track with a solid effort just missing the high performance standard by 0.06.
TYLER NIGHTINGALE: 300m – 37.26
JEFF BARR: 1500m – 4:08.86
ALISON LAROCQUE: HIGH JUMP – 1.55m, GOLD
Alison just missed a new PB 1.58m on her third attempt at it.
LIZA HOWARD: 1000m – 3:09.09
NATALIE DESIMINI: 1000m – 3:09.78, PB
ATHLETES OF THE MEET
ROOKIES: LEAH LAROCQUE AND MIKEY PRIME.
Leah posted another outstanding result which should see her highly ranked in the CIS. Mikey just keeps on speeding up the ALL TIME charts and making a dramatic impact on the men’s sprint program.
VETERANS: LESLIE SEXTON; MATT HULSE
Leslie had another sensation effort and cracked her 2nd ALL TIME list. Matt cracked into the ALL TIME list individually for the first time with a super effort.
